Modding Thermal Grease
Unfortunately I didn’t know exactly what the metal was. But the history of its origin, its physical properties and appearance unambiguously testified to its noble origin. There is only one shortcoming: the pieces are small and crooked. So, I straightened them on an anvil and put on a flat sheet of aluminium. As a result I got what is necessary for “grinding”, two planes of 4*6 cm and 3*3 of mosaic form. The first thought was to solder it with a soldering iron. But I changed my mind; if I failed in making the modding I would like to remelt the silver, but it would be contaminated with tin. Therefore I decided to fix it with epoxy adhesive.

For that purpose I cut out the workpieces of a plane piece of iron. Then I soldered a kind of handle to the smaller workpiece to make the process of grinding more convenient. I put a plastic sachet under it to prevent sticking of the resin to aluminium. Then I degreased component parts with spirits, mixed the resin and glued.

I’ve got such result after polymerization of epoxy resin. It would be better if I glued with cold welding to prevent leaking. But this idea didn’t come into my mind in time.

I smoothed out the adhesive buildup with emery-paper, then made plane on a lapping machine. I got the result quickly and it was nice. (look to lapping guide)

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
