Modding RGB cooler

Besides microchip with its block and light diodes we need: several resistors, a set of connectors for the loop, ferrichloride, and an old printer cord for making programmer. We also need a soldering iron, kit of tools and skilful fingers, of course.
I needed sidecutter and screwdriver for preliminary work. At first take 5 mm light diodes out of cooler and nip off the wire from the back of the card. In other words we dismount the original construction of the cooler backlight. We don’t need it any more…

Light diodes can be used for another modding later…

Then we must ream a hole for the light diodes up to 6 mm. We’ll put 3 light diodes in each corner, their diameter is 3 mm. If we put them in a bunch, their overall diameter will be exactly 6 mm.

After roaming we get the following result:

Then make a bunch of 3 light diodes of different colours. Fix them with a sticky tape for the sake of convenience. Solder three negative sides of light diodes in the middle, and shorten the positive sides as shown in the picture. Remove the fixing sticky tape.

Then solder the wirings and isolate contacts with a heat shrink sleeve.

Then mount the light diodes bunches in the cooler. Don’t mix up the wires, use isolation of different colour.
Repeat these operations with other light diodes.

Cut off from behind the three-strand power lead and tachometer cable, solder new wires.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
