Silent computer

Fanless \ Noiseless computer #2

Calm and cosy flat, birds are singing behind the window, at night I can hear antique clock ticking in the hall and my beloved snuffling on my shoulder… and my computer droning with its five fans and chattering with HDDs… I'd let things the way they are if I had a separate room for computer related work - but I don't, at least for now. I guess many other people don’t have it either and are as well being fatigued by computer noise. I hope that my experience of building a fanless computer helps such people to solve this problem. The history of my way to the fanless computer is trivial. I started like many others… good low-RPM fans, damping the case with sound absorbing materials, water cooling… To tell the truth, I flinch when I recall it. All this work brought me together with the good guys from who were already on the way to the ultimate solution. As a result, my super-duper-fanless computer was born. Confidencially speaking, its appearance is rather good.., it looks not so good solely in the photos. In real life it is a nice desktop weighing only twenty five kilograms. Besides its silence there are other advantages, for example you can warm up one’s bottom sitting on top of it without fearing for its integrity. And guileful burglars will not be able run far away with it :).

So, I’ll tell you how I did all this. The base is made out of an aluminum plate, some of which Admin and I bought at a flea market (see fanless PC #1). Its thickness is impressive, forty millimeters, weight is nearly ten kilograms. It is used as a rigid stand and all equipment is fixed to it. This is a view from above. The holes at the foreground really spoil the view. At first I wanted to putty and paint them over but there was no time… moreover the holes are not visible as my printer stands on top of the computer. To my big surprise this doesn’t impede convection.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
