How to make a heatpipe-based cooling system on your own

Having bent all the heat pipes, assemble the cooler as a whole, check how evenly the cooler abuts the processor and improve the bending if necessary. You may do this with the help of a piece of paper cut as shown in the picture. Check the abutment tightness at the processor cover angles. The piece of paper must not get in any angle.

And now the last stage of the modding comes. It’s high time to reveal our know-how which helps to achieve almost ideal contact of the heat pipes with the heat remover. So, how can we achieve this?
Lubrication of pipes with thermal paste doesn’t help because the paste has a low heat transfer coefficient, near 0.8 W/m K compared to 380 of copper. Moreover it’s difficult to achieve good contact with our bent heat pipes…
Our first tests were not successful. We couldn’t reach a safe contact of the pipes with heat remover. All the work came to nothing. The first model was considered untenable and thrown away. The way out was found unexpectedly on its own. I simply took that heat remover and soldered the pipes with quick solder. The result exceeded all expectations. The device worked perfectly!!! A 1800 W fan designed for construction work couldn’t warm up the modded device to 100° C for a long time when I wanted to move the pipe! A wonderful solution was found.

So, the last stage of the modding is pipes soldering. Proceed to this process at the very end of the modding. I advise you to check everything once again beforehand. All the patterns and adjustment, shaping and bending, grinding and polishing must have been completed. We need quick solder and soldering flux. I recommend to use Rose or Wood alloy and neutral flux F38, without spirit and colophony.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
