It’s a pity to say, but there are such questions in our forum that I think some modders were not attending physics lessons at school. I’ll try to correct this, particularly. I won’t delve into basics, but I’ll show different methods of connecting diodes and coolers to your computer and I’ll answer most common questions.
How can I make my computer fanless, how can I make cooler work silently?
There is no ideal way of solving this problem. But you can try. To make your computer fanless you should bring down the cooler power supply to 7 or even 5 volts. But there is a risk that computer components will be overheated. If you are ready to risks and if you won’t forget to control temperature, then go on. Here’s the connector (Molex) of computer power source.
Two black wires – minus, red one – plus five volts, yellow – twelve. It’s not hard to guess that between yellow and red it’ll be seven volts. This power is enough to start experiments with a cooler. You can also buy governor component for a couple of bucks, but I don't recommend you to do it, Chinese device is always overheated and it can mistrust you, I don't trust them.
There are three wires in the cooler
Black - minus, red – plus, yellow – tachometer. Try not to mismatch polarity, not all coolers can suppress this. The temperature of a computer can change greatly, depending of its load and time of the year, that’s why it will be useful to make a switch of power supply- BayBus. You’ll need switches, diodes (they are for indication, you can make the switch without them) and drive cover to install switches and diodes on it.
I recommend you to buy good coolers for these experiments, you shouldn't use cheap ones. It will make noise and there will be problems with low voltage, there will be problems and it will burn off soon. Here’s the scheme for turning it on 5 and 12 volts. Turn on the indication diodes through the second contact group.
I repeat, don’t forget to control the temperature of devices and regularly blow off the dust. There is a useful program for controlling all temperatures Speedfan. You should check parameters on a loaded computer, there are special programs, but you can do it manually.
